Research methodologies in the BA curriculum of design and visual communication
PROGRAMME The chair: Anke Coumans, Research Coordinator and lecturer in research methodologies of the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU), the Netherlands, anke.coumans@central.hku.nl
In this working group we aim to find research methodologies and visual ways of report in the BA curricula of design education. Due to developments as the BA-MA structure and the growing interest of clients in the design process, design schools are challenged to develop clear research methodologies concerning design.
14.15 - 15.00 Presentation by Mrs. Anke Coumans, research coordinator Utrecht School of the Arts At The Utrecht school of the Arts in the Netherlands progress has been made on both the area of the research methodology as on the development of the visual essay as a form in which designers can report on results in a designerly way. In their third year students work on a project that is comparable in process and in aims with the design profession. The students are taught to do research in a creative and systematic way. The students develop visual ways of organizing research results and they finally present a visual essay.
15.00-16.00 Brainstorm sessions Exchange experiences and share knowledge concerning the development of research activities in the design curriculum. What are the different views on writing and visualizing research results? What should be the balance between intuition and methodology? How can we learn from the different approaches of the each other?
