Created in March 2000 by the Institute of Visual Arts, Design and Marketing, under the Article 39, Chapter VI of the statutes of the Design School published in DR, s. 2, n 119, 22nd of April 1999. Since 2003 under FCT's plurianual programme of R&D units. MissionThe guidelines that rule the activities of the Unit are centred on Design and Communication. In recent years, Design has been affirming itself as a binding discipline in the fields of Philosophy, Art, Science and Technology and Communication Sciences. We could even say that, at this moment, Design plays the same connecting role of human activities the Arts have had during the Renaissance being the heir of Disegno the founding projectual concept developed in that epoch. Based on the perspectives of Comparative History, the artistic aspects and the contributions of Aesthetics and Communication Sciences, in conjunction with the Theory of Information, Economics, Engineering and Materials, could bring a new impetus to scientific research, brought together through the concept of the Project. It provides a new vision on Art as part of the human material culture that participates in creating the world we call “Trans-disciplinary”. A trans-disciplinary approach implies the acknowledgment that so many professional, academic and research disciplines contribute today to the development of the artificial world. This approach also Implies accepting its relation with the natural systems, with the societies' history, with the pluralistic ideas and individual perspectives in permanence with universal human values. A trans-disciplinary approach determines a softening of each scientific domain's methodological threads in order to incorporate knowledge from whatever source. It implies an open and integrative epistemological attitude. Finally, it implies the end of the fracture between Art and Science. In this context from the initial three lines of research: Sciences of Design, Theory and History of Material Culture and Marketing an Advertising, we moved to only two lines of research: Sciences of Design and Material Culture and Marketing and Advertising. This resulted mainly from the very successful conference “Pride and PreDesign, The Cultural Heritage and the Sciences of Design” that gathered researchers from both approaches. UNIDCOM hopes that IADE may soon award a doctoral degree in Design in the fields of Design History and Design Theory resulting from the statutes changes to be made under the new Portuguese Higher Education Institutions Legal Regime thus fully accomplishing its mission.
