CEIS - Iconography and Symbolic Study Centre

The Iconography and Symbolic Study Centre, CEIS, is a Research Department within IADE, formed by researchers working either gratuitously or belonging to the Design and Marketing Schools or any other university or cultural institution, national or international, and can also include other collaborators.


The researchers form the permanent body of the CEIS and can also be called upon to perform administrative duties. They can apply to the CEIS research scholarships, subjected to the Research Project supervisor's substantiated advice, if not holding a doctoral degree..


The collaborators proposed by the Project supervisors will take part in the activities of the CEIS for an undetermined length of time, approved by the Scientific Commission.


The CEIS follows the rules established by the Superior Council of IADE. It follows the present regulations in what concerns purely internal affairs.


Objectives


To stimulate the research, inventory and systemization of iconography and traditional symbolic culture.


To promote or implement training and information events leading to:


  • Complementing school teachings;
  • Reconverting human resources in their object's fields of expertise;
  • Establishing a body of assimilation agents according to the demands of their object;
  • Creating a larger conscience of the value and importance of the traditional symbolic culture in everyday life.

  • To create a database and promoting it at national and international level.


    To allow the circulation and distribution of the collected information, promoting training courses, seminars, conferences, shows, exhibitions and study visits on the subject, namely:


  • The dynamics of the imaginary and its operative concepts;
  • The sources of symbolic culture;
  • The philosophies of symbolism and their respective hermeneutic systems;
  • The symbolism of the Temple;
  • Symbols and their migration.

  • To promote cooperation, exchange of experiences and intermediary agencies with the Portuguese-speaking and European communities regarding the areas and disciplines of the object in question, particularly with public or private universities and other teaching institutions, as well as with any other entity running projects in that area.


    To promote national and international service providing activities, such as consultancy, publishing and distribution of specialized publications, production and distribution of multimedia systems and other support logistic means, as well as the equipment needed to attain their objectives.


    To support the creation of regional bodies in the Portuguese-speaking world dedicated to the research and promotion of symbolic culture.
